Program Details

Education: Reimagining Young Judaea

Due to the reorganization of Young Judaea staffing, the movement leadership will be making weighty decisions upon the future of the movement, its vision as a Zionist Youth Movement and its relation to Israel, social justice, Pluralism, activism, Jewish Identity and how members can personally advance these causes.

Asepha and Young Judaea Caucus

This process will culminate in our Aspeha, where the convention body will discuss these issues and put into place recommendations, policies and constitutional amendments, including revisiting Young Judaea’s mission, reinstituting membership fees and restructuring the movement’s leadership structure.

Young Judaea’s Optional Extra Day in “The Hills!”

Have you visited Hollywood? Have you taken a tour of Universal Studios? Have you ever been to the famed San Monica Pier? If you haven’t then you should book your return flight for Tuesday, February 17th and stay with YJ an extra day for our Day in “The Hills” program and do all that! Why come all the way LA without seeing the sights and the stars?!?

Online Registration & Forms

Registration for National Midwinter Convention will be taking place entirely online this year, with a deadline of February 1, 2009. To register now click here.

This will take you to the application page for convention and you will be given instructions about how to register, including paying online, submitting your personal and travel information. Once you have completed the online registration forms you will receive an e-mail confirmation indicating that we have received your application with attached forms to download.

These release forms must be completed, signed, and mailed in to be fully registered for convention.

Your registration will be considered complete ONLY when you have completed the online application and received confirmation, signed and mailed in the downloadable forms, and paid the convention fee in full. Once you have registered, you will receive a complete convention guide in the coming weeks.

Travel Information

All flights for convention should arrive at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Friday, February 13th by 1 pm & depart on Monday, February 16th after 12 pm (or Tuesday, February 17th after 12 pm if staying for Day in “The Hills” Program.)

There will also be transportation from Valley Outreach Synagogue in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

For more information about convention transportation and to submit your travel details, you must register online. (See above instructions.)

Travel Subsidy Information

In order to reach as many Jewish teens as possible regardless of financial background, Young Judaea has made available a special travel subsidy fund. This fund is specifically intended to alleviate costs to families that need financial assistance to pay for flying to Midwinter Convention.

We welcome any and all donations to this fund to help Jewish teens afford travel despite the current difficult economic landscape.

It is our expectation that participants who request the travel subsidy also have sought financial assistance from other sources. All registered participants who apply will receive:

  1. Guaranteed $125 reimbursement upon receipt of proof of ticket purchase
  2. Personal support for individual self-fundraising from Young Judaea’s National Administrative Vice President
Application for the travel subsidy will be accepted no later than midnight, February 12th, 2009. If you have any questions, please contact Andrew Fretwell, Director of Youth Leadership at 212-303-8283 or by email at afretwell@youngjudaea.org.

All flights should be booked directly by you, and a copy of your receipt/ticket invoice, verifying the expense you incurred, should be submitted after you have registered online. Reimbursements will not be made without this documentation of your expense. You can expect to receive your travel scholarship check eight weeks after attending convention.

Further Details

Anyone who has registered online for convention will receive a full convention guide in the coming months, complete with details about LAX, convention logistics, and possibly a request form for certain program sessions.
